Hair Cycle Overview: Anagen, catagen, and telogen.

The Hair Growth Cycle

Anagen

The anagen phase is the active stage of hair growth, where the hair follicle is fully engaged in generating new hair strands. This phase typically lasts anywhere from two to seven years, depending on factors like genetics, age, and overall health. It's during this time that hair achieves its maximum potential length before transitioning to the next stage in the growth cycle. Proper care and nutrition can support a longer anagen phase, contributing to healthier and fuller hair.

Catagen

The catagen phase is a brief transitional stage in the hair growth cycle. During this period, the hair strand separates from its blood supply, and the hair follicle begins to shrink, preparing for a period of rest. This phase typically lasts a few weeks and marks the end of active growth. Although short, the catagen phase is essential for the natural renewal of hair, as it allows the follicle to reset and prepare for the next step in the growth cycle.

Telogen

The telogen phase is the resting stage of the hair growth cycle, during which hair growth pauses, and the strand remains in place until it is naturally shed. This phase lasts anywhere from several weeks to a few months, depending on individual factors such as age, health, and hormonal balance. During this time, new hair begins forming in the follicle beneath the resting strand, ready to restart the cycle. Shedding in the telogen phase is a normal part of hair renewal, with an average person losing 50-100 hairs daily as part of this natural process.

What are “sleeping” hairs?

Dormant hairs, or "sleeping" hairs, refer to hair follicles that are inactive and not producing visible hair, often appearing as bald spots on the face. These follicles have not yet entered the stages of the hair growth cycle and remain inactive beneath the skin's surface. Since they do not generate hair shafts, they are considered "asleep" until activated.

Study Overview

This study involved 100 men, divided into two groups: one received weekly microneedling with twice-daily 5% minoxidil application, while the other used only twice-daily 5% minoxidil application.

  • A 1 cm target area was marked with two diagonal tattoos for consistent measurements. Hair counts were obtained using color macro-photographs of the target area. Photos were taken at baseline (before treatment) and at 12 weeks,  captured with a fixed focus, distance, and exposure using a specialized camera adapter. Hairs were marked and counted by a blinded evaluator at both time points, with the area re-clipped at week 12. Hair counts per square centimeter were used to calculate the mean change from baseline.

  • The Combination Group outperformed those using topicals alone by 4X, with an average increase of 91.4 hairs per cm².

Study Conclusion

Combining Topicals with microneedling delivers faster and more noticeable growth. It is particularly effective for those who have been unresponsive to conventional methods.

Fun Facts

Did you Know?

  • Facial hair grows around 0.2 to 0.3 millimeters every day.
  • Microneedling, originally popular in women’s skincare, is effective for everyone and offers benefits beyond skincare.
  • Shaving doesn’t make your beard grow faster or thicker. It just looks thicker for a few days because the hair is cut at its thickest point.
  • The average face has about 30,000 hairs—some growing and others resting under the skin.
